ABB demonstrates its comprehensive technology strength and innovative technology at “ABB Automation World”

“Innovation and Resource Efficiency” is the future of industrial development

ABB’s automation technology helps industry customers improve industrial productivity and efficiency

Shanghai, May 13, 2009 –ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, today announced the opening of ABB Automation World 2009 in Shanghai. The event, themed “Innovation and Resource Efficiency”, is designed to discuss and share insights regarding future trends of the automation field with over a thousand attendants from government bodies, academic circles and a broad range of industry fields through various activities including seminars, exhibitions and over 90 technical workshops. The event demonstrates ABB’s leading thoughts and strong technological strength in the fields of automation and robotics.

Joe Hogan, ABB Group CEO, delivered a keynote speech at the opening forum of ABB Automation World 2009. “Energy remains the engine of our global economy, and as that economy inevitably recovers, investment will resume and demand for energy will rise again. The challenges of energy shortage and environment pollution are still around, and the market desire for industrial productivity, for energy efficiency and for power grid reliability remain strong. Competition will intensify in both domestic and international markets. We should all be thinking about the long term, with respect to conserving our resources, increasing our productivity, and finding new solutions to reduce emissions.”

During the event, ABB is showcasing a broad range of advanced automation products, systems and solutions. ABB M3BP low-voltage process performance motor was on its debut exhibition in China. Designed with ABB global Automatic Data Extractor and Plotting Table (ADEPT), M3BP motor features high efficiency and reliability, reduced operation cost demand on customer and the capability to function under the toughest conditions of process industry. Now the efficiency level of ABB motors sold in China is 1.5 to 2 percent higher than average. With all ABB motors sold in China until now, 2.1 billion kWh of power can be saved annually.

ABB is the global leader in industrial robotic applications. In China, ABB produces and commissions industrial robots and systems to perform functions which include assembling, painting, welding, picking, machining, packaging and stacking. ABB boasts the widest robotic product portfolio, technology, and range of services, as well as the largest installation base worldwide. To date, ABB has installed more than 160,000 robotic units worldwide making it the leading industrial robotics supplier with a significant market share in the world. In addition, ABB is the only multinational company operating production base for industrial robots in China.

As the leader and pioneer in renewable energy development and utilization, ABB will exhibit its advanced development solutions for renewable energy, including solar, wind and nuclear power. The exhibition covers the process from renewable energy development to utilization, showing ABB’s capacity to help the world make use of sustainable energy through innovative methods. As a trailblazer in solar power generation, ABB’s products and solutions have been fully employed in Sierra Nevada, Europe’s largest solar power station in southern Spain, opening a new era of zero-emission and sustainable power generation.

At the event, ABB is also highlighting its advanced engineering services, including ABB Full Service○R, ABB Industrial Consulting Service, ABB Produce Life Cycle Management Services and Equipment Performance Services, which help customer significantly improve their productivity and efficiency. An example is ABB Full Service○R, which is an effective service package designed for asset-intensive enterprises. It comprises of system and process design for equipment maintenance management, helping enterprises ensure and optimize equipment performance, lower maintenance costs and secure the reliability and stability of equipment in daily operations. More importantly, it provides implementation and execution services, thereby significantly improving the efficiency and profitability of the customers’ products. Beginning in 2001, ABB Full Service○R has enabled Outokumpu Stainless, in Sweden, to achieve a number of improvements at its Degerfors steel mill, including an 80% increase in production volume in unit time, and a 58% drop in maintenance cost per ton.

Outstanding innovation and optimal resource efficiency are keys to the sustainable development of any company. ABB was the first company to direct attention to the issue of corporate resource efficiency, and during recent decades has been dedicated to the development and application of new technology through continued innovation, helping every industry improve its business and environmental performance. In 2008, the company invested over $1 billion in R&D, with over 50% of its R&D efforts aimed at improving energy efficiency.
