ABB donates 4.88 million RMB to support multiple social welfare projects

Unreserved care in despite of global financial turmoil, the latest contributions demonstrate ABB’s long term commitment to corporate social responsibility

Beijing, China, November 28, 2008 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has recently donated a total of 4.88 million RMB to the China Red Cross Society, the China Green Foundation (CGF) and China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA). The contributions will be used to support post-earthquake reconstruction projects in the Wenchuan area of Sichuan province, the anti-desertification project in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, and financially disadvantaged college students from poverty-stricken areas. Despite the current economic downturn, ABB has not ceased in its charitable actions in the community.

President of the ABB North Asia Region and Chairman and President of ABB China Brice Koch commented, “Economic development and corporate growth should benefit the public. Under the current complex and volatile economic conditions, disadvantaged disaster victims and impoverished college students need more attention from all walks of society. At the same time, we cannot neglect environmental protection while seeking economic growth. Our goal is to make greater contributions to social progress and wellbeing in order to achieve the harmonious development of society as a whole.”

As a concerned corporate citizen, ABB has consistently promoted sustainable development through donations to and participation in a variety of social welfare programs. The latest donations come as part of ABB’s long-term support for these public welfare enterprises.

Whenever a major disaster has occurred in China, ABB has always demonstrated its deep concern by delivering timely support to the disaster stricken areas. A portion of the donation, 3.3 million RMB, will fund two school construction projects in the Sichuan earthquake area through the China Red Cross. It is yet another substantial act of charity following ABB’s donations of more than 8 million RMB this year. To date, ABB’s total charitable donation towards residents and relief programs of local power facilities in the Sichuan disaster zone has reached 11.45 million RMB.

Environmental protection has remained a high priority for ABB. ABB not only utilizes its energy efficient technology and products to contribute to environmental protection, but the company also takes part in various ecological protection projects to help build an environmentally sustainable society. The company launched a three-year anti-desertification project in 2007, together with the Inner Mongolia Power Company (IMEP) and its affiliate, Ordos Bureau of Electric Power of Inner Mongolia. The project is expected to reforest over ten thousand mu of desert, building an ecological sand barrier or a “green fence” for Beijing and the northwest electric power corridor. Following a joint donation of 600 thousand RMB with the Ordos Bureau of Electric Power in July, 2008, ABB and IMEP’s Ordos Bureau are donating another 600 thousand RMB to the China Green Foundation to facilitate a successful implementation of the second-phase of the anti-desertification project.

ABB has always endeavored to promote the development of elite talent including college students through the support of education and training programs. On the three-day event “ABB Technology Days” held in Beijing from Nov.12 through 14, the company’s partners and customers not only visited the exhibition of leading products, systems and solutions in the power and automation fields, but also donated 280,000 RMB to the ABB-New Great Wall Fund for College Students of the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation. In addition, ABB has again contributed 1 million RMB to CFPA, adding the total donation up to 1.28 million RMB in total. So far, nearly 1,000 students in 37 colleges and universities across the country have benefited from ABB’s education programs launched 4 years ago. In addition to the elite talent, the company also supports the vocational education of young technicians in order to help them gain a better life as well as address the lack of technical manpower in China.

“We’d like to thank ABB for its support of China’s public welfare enterprises over the years,” says Ms. Lin Liyun, Honorary Chairman of CFPA. “I believe these efforts will touch many hearts. ABB has always advocated ‘Leading technology for a better world.’ I’d like to add two words, changing it to ‘Leading technology and love for a better world.’”

Committed to its role as a first-rate corporate citizen, ABB has initiated and participated in a series of long-term public welfare programs. These efforts include supporting education, environmental protection, and social welfare, benefiting broad sections of society, including the elderly, the handicapped, the impoverished, students and urban residents.

The company’s major public welfare actions include:

  • In early 2008, when southern China suffered heavy snowstorms, ABB immediately responded with donations through CFPA for the purchase of relief goods for the disaster area.
  • In 2007, ABB launched a three-year project caring for senior citizens in Shanghai. The project is helping nursing homes in the Shanghai improve facilities and benefits over 1,000 elderly people.
  • From 2007, ABB has worked with local vocational schools in Xiamen, Chongqing and other areas to set up the ABB Class and ABB scholarship programs in order to help financially disadvantaged students enroll in vocational schools and acquire high demand labor skills, ensuring their future employment and the elimination of poverty.
  • From 2005, ABB has actively participated in the project to beautify and construct greenbelts around the Three Gorges reservoir area.
  • Since 2000, ABB has contributed over 10 million RMB to the Special Olympics.

It is ABB’s belief that a corporation cannot be involved in public welfare enterprises in the short term. Only consistent dedication and continuous efforts can bring long lasting results. Through its latest donations, ABB hopes to maximize public resources via various channels to help people in need, bringing love and warmth to every corner of society.
