Beijing, China, April 17, 2007 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced today to bring its latest type of robot into production in China, marking another important movement after the global Robotics Business headquarters opened in Shanghai in April, 2006. According to the orders ABB has received, the initial batch of 15 robots will not only help Chinese customers to improve quality and efficiency, but also will be exported to South Korea and Australia. Up to now, ABB is the only international company that manufactures industrial robotics locally in China.

The world-class production lines will produce heavy industrial robots and controllers. The heavy robot serve the customers in various industries such as automotive, electronics, consumer products, foundry, foods and etc in an effective way to improve quality, reduce cost and increase the level of competence in the market. Many well-known automobile manufacturers have already had this type of ABB robots installed in car body workshop for spot welding application.

“The success in putting the new types of robot into production once again shows the confidence of ABB in China’s position as an important global manufacturing and designing base,” said Per Vegard Nerseth, Head of ABB Robotics Division China. ” The Robot Production in China is strictly following the international quality control standards. By adopting the same level of production processes and technologies, as well as fully utilizing the current resources including engineering, suppliers and R&D etc., the new production lines can greatly shorten delivery time and provide technical supports with quick response in the same time zone to meet the customer requirements in China and Asia Pacific Region.

As the pioneer and the global leader in robot technology, ABB invented the first industrial robot in the world in 1974, and possesses the broadest range of robot, technologies and services, as well as the largest robot installation worldwide at present.

Since entering the 21st century, China has seen rapid development in its industrial sector, which has increased the demand for industrial robots. As the leading company in the industry, ABB took a strategic move by relocating its global robotics headquarters to China, and deals with a wide range of robot business including manufacturing, research and development, sales and engineering services. ABB has provided more than 4,000 robots in China and is the market leader.

Per Vegard explained: “Automobile industry is still the largest user of robots. On the forthcoming The Shanghai International Automobile Industry Fair, people will see many high quality automobiles which have applied ABB robotic technology. Although we have a lot of multinational customers in China such as Daimler Chrysler, PSA and Honda etc, ABB have also established the partner relationships with more and more outstanding Chinese enterprises such as Geely and Great Wall Auto.”

In April 2005, ABB established corporate research and development centers in Beijing and Shanghai. It has consistently been focusing on the research and development of robot technology and customized application. With the expansion of research and development team in China, ABB will continue to develop new robot solutions to meet the special requirements from customers in this region and improve their productivity and efficiency.
