ABB local innovation solution breaks through the bottleneck of grid power expansion

Help customers reduce cost and shorten the project period

Beijing, May 21, 2007 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, achieved another development in local innovation. ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd, its first joint venture in China, has completed the grid power expansion project for Guangzhou 110kV Jiangnan Substation recently with its innovative solution. This solution not only satisfied Guangzhou Grid customer's need for mitigating the bottleneck of grid power and increasing reliability and capability of power supply, but also help customers cut nearly RMB 5 million cost and reduce the project period by 75%.

Accompanied with China economy's fast growth, the demand for domestic power supply has been increasing. According to statistics, the total load of South Grid has been upgraded 13 times since 2006, reaching 60.25 GW, 15.4% more than a year earlier. The maximum electricity shortage of the province reached 6.5 GW and the annual shortage amounts to 10.5 billion kWH. Guangdong Grid has very serious structural electricity shortage. The existing 10kV incoming switchgears and entire busbars of Guangzhou 110kV Jiangnan Substation, which provides power supply for factories, schools, hospitals and commercial avenues in Haizhu District, needs to be expanded to 4000A. The upgrading of its integrated automation control and protection is also required. If all the existing switchgears replaced, a total sum of more than RMB 6 million and 3 months of project time are needed.

The service team of ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd. brought an innovative solution which takes full advantage of ABB's modular design characteristics of MV switchgears to meet the requirements for expanding the electricity capacity, reconstructing of automation control and protection. By replacing some particular components, it brings to success of upgrading the whole system and helps customers save nearly RMB 5 million and reduce the project throughout time to 4 weeks.

Brice Koch, chairman and president for ABB China, emphasized that a major reason for ABB's sustainable growth in China is that it combines business closely with market needs. The innovative solution designed for Guangzhou Grid also opens up a brand-new business gain for ABB. ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd. will work on other two switchgear capacity expansion projects of Longtan and Dongti Substations in Guangzhou after completing the Jiangnan project.

Currently, ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd. can provide various tailor-made reconstruction solutions including busbar capacity expansion, busduct capacity expansion, protection upgrade, switchgear structure and vacuum circuit breakers retrofitting, switch upgrade replacement, etc. Meanwhile, ABB begins to work on retrofitting non-ABB products. ABB switchgears gain strong competitive advantages with its high compatibility and completed portfolio for upgrading, generating great social and economic benefits for customers.

Established in 1992 as ABB's the first joint-venture in China, ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd. has now become one of the largest manufacturers of medium voltage primary switchgears and circuit breakers in the world, with an annual production capacity of more than 15,000 units of switchgears and more than 35,000 units of vacuum circuit breakers. In September 2006, the company was selected for 7 years consecutively as one of the China Top 100 Electric Companies, and takes up the first place on the high voltage switchgear industry in terms of revenue and output. It was also awarded one of "China Top 10 Electric Companies for Strength".
