Locally produced traction transformers will increase the electrification level of domestic railways and improve operational safety of high-speed locomotives.
April 30, 2008, Beijing, China - ABB, the global leading power and automation technology group, recently obtained a contract worth around RMB 200 million from Bombardier CPC Propulsion System Co., Ltd. ABB will provide advanced, international standard traction transformers to the China Railway high-speed sleeper car EMU project. The equipment will improve the speed of company’s high-power electric locomotives and also maintain operational safety and reliability. The transformers will be manufactured by ABB Datong Traction Transformers Co., Ltd.
With the rise of the national economy, the Chinese railway has entered a phase of accelerated development. High-speed locomotives capable of more than 200 km/hr are now being introduced, increasing demand for many products, including traction transformers.
“As the world’s leading supplier of traction transformers, ABB has been actively involved in the modernization of China's railways,” said Bernd Muehe, head of ABB’s Power Products Division for the North Asia region and China, “With state of the art technology, timely delivery and professional after-sales service, ABB has earned the trust from vehicle manufacturers and suppliers.”
ABB’s traction transformers are high capacity but compact and light-weight. They are highly resistant to mechanical impact and heat resistance, providing high reliability. As essential components of both light- and mainline locomotives, the transformers also contribute to the energy efficiency of rail transportation.
ABB Datong Traction Transformers Co., Ltd. was set up in 2005 in cooperation with Datong Electric Locomotive Co. Ltd. and has since gained a leading position in China’s railway traction transformer market. This position will be supported by ABB Traction Converters Ltd., which opened earlier this month in Nanjing, specializing in the design, manufacture, sales and service of traction converters and auxiliary converters for the rail sector.
