ABB’s participation in Shanghai Expo ensures power supply security
Beijing, January 21, 2010 –Today marks the 100-day countdown to the opening of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has contributed its leading products and technology to a number of Shanghai Expo construction projects, ensuring the smooth and efficient accomplishment of the international showcase.
Bernd Muehe, head of the Power Products division of ABB North Asia Region and ABB China, said, “Shanghai Expo is a grand global event celebrating worldwide economic, cultural, scientific and technological achievements. It attracts worldwide attention from people of all walks of life. We are honored to support a number of Expo and Urban Metro projects with our leading power products and technology, helping to ensure the success of Shanghai Expo. Furthermore, our participation in such high profile construction projects demonstrates recognition of ABB’s technology strength and expertise.”
A full range of ABB transformers have been widely deployed in a number of substation projects to ensure the power supply to Expo facilities. ABB supplied 550kV transformers for the Yanggao, Nanqiao and Nanhui stations at the Expo Site, as well as 220kV transformers at the Lianyun, Nanshi, Pudong, Airport, Yangsi, Jinan and Tilanqiao stations. Both the Yanggao and Lianyun substations are key power facilities in the Expo Park area and will play a major role in ensuring power security for the Expo. In addition, ABB 110kV transformers have been extensively adopted in the No. 7-Expo Line, and the No. 10 and No. 11 metro lines, and ABB 10kV transformers have been installed in the No. 10 metro line and the 4500kW Solar Photovoltaic Demonstration Project at the Theme Pavilion and the China Pavilion of Shanghai Expo. The 10kV transformers and 10kV Switchgears have also been used in the Expo Emergency Center in Pudong and the Pudong Expo Village.
Furthermore, ABB 550kV Gas Insulated Switchgears featuring a compact design have been installed in the Jingan substation. It is world’s largest underground substation with the highest voltage level in the city center. ABB 110kV and 35kV Gas Insulated Switchgears have been deployed in the substations of the Expo Axis Station and the Houtan Provisional Station. 72 units of ABB ring main unit gas-insulated switchgears will also been installed in the central area of the Puxi Expo Site.
ABB is a global leader in power and transformer technology and the largest manufacturer of transformers, delivering over 1,500 power transformers and over 400,000 distribution transformers annually from its 57 production facilities worldwide. The company adheres to the global unified TrafoStar design concept in the production of its transformers, which feature high load capacity, short circuit protection, low power loss, and low cost over the entire life-cycle.
ABB is also providing advanced automation technology to a wide range of Shanghai Expo projects, including ABB Low Voltage Circuit Breakers and Control products to the Theme Pavilion, the Performing Arts Center and the Dwelling Center and the Power Center of the Urban Best Practices Area, ABB MNS3.0 Low Voltage Switchgears to the Communication Base Station in the Expo Park area, ABB ACS510 Drives to the Performing Arts Center and Power Center, and specially designed high accuracy AquaMaster Magnetic Flow Meters to the Water Supply Network Project.
Shanghai Expo will take place from May 1st to October 31st, coinciding with both the monsoon season and the peak period of summer electricity usage. The event expects to attract 70 million visitors from both home and abroad, bringing daily passenger flow of approximately 400,000 people and peak daily volume of 600,000, posing a serious challenge to the reliable supply of power for Expo facilities and urban metro lines.
ABB has a long history of experience in securing the power supply of large-scale projects. ABB was a key participant in the power reliability of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. As a key power system supplier for construction projects of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympics Games, ABB received a special award from the Beijing Electric Power Company in October 2008 for its Outstanding Contributions to the Power Security of the Games.
