ABB committed to supporting “green energy” with leading wind power technology

“Enabling the power of wind” with leading electrical systems and service

Beijing, June 25, 2008 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, attended “Wind Power Asia 2008” Exhibition & Conference here today with its leading edge product, system and service portfolio, ensuring reliable and high quality power for its wind power customers including turbine manufacturers and grid owners.

“ABB is strongly committed to help deal with environmental and energy shortage issues, with leading technologies in developing renewable energy and increasing energy efficiency,” said Isabelle Liu, vice president of Corporate Communications for ABB China and North Asia.

She said ABB has been active in supporting wind power industry for more than 20 years, being the largest supplier of electrical components, systems and services for wind power industry. With its sustainable solutions, special industry expertise and technology advantages, as well as its more than 100 years of rich experience in cooperating with electric power facility, process and automation industry and OEM manufacturers, ABB provides the most comprehensive series of wind power converters, generators, transformers together with ancillary products and services. Since the beginning of the 1980s, ABB has delivered more than 2,000 wind turbine generators. In the global wind power industry, more than 6,000 ABB transformers are operating reliably and efficiently.

In China, ABB has actively participated in a number of large-scale wind power projects, including China's largest wind power farm Jiangsu Rudong Wind Farm, and the Huitengshile wind farm in Inner Mongolia, etc. To Rudong, ABB provided its Compact substation with distribution transformers and a ring main unit to feed electricity to local transmission network.

Early this month, ABB launched its new wind power drive product ACS800-67/77 low voltage drive’s production lines in Beijing.

Globally, ABB has been a key supplier to many major wind power construction projects including winning the world’s largest offshore wind farm project in Germany in 2007, to connect the wind power to the German power grid by using its HVDC Light technology. That order reached 400 million USD in total value.

Wind power construction has been growing fast recently in China. Statistics from the Global Wind Energy Council show that China’s newly installed capacity of wind power increased 3449 MW in 2007, ranking the third in the world wind power market. By 2020, it is expected that China’s accumulated wind power capacity will reach 80 million ~ 100 million kW, and keep growing at a high speed in the next few years.

China enjoys rich wind power resources, accounting for 9.2% of the world supply, opening huge potential for the wind power industry.
