ABB wins US$ 11 million switchgear order in China

2003-01-26 - Fast track order is ABB’s fourth for Jiaxing Phase II power plant

Beijing, China, January 27, 2003 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced today that it has received a US$ 11 million order to supply high voltage gas insulated switchgear for the Jiaxing Phase II power station in the coastal Zhejiang Province, China.

The contract, signed with Zhejiang Provincial Electric Power Equipment & Material Supply Company for plant owner Zhejiang Jiahua Electric Power Company, is for the design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of a 500kV Power IT gas insulated switchgear type ELK-3 with nine circuit breaker bays. The installation will be part of the system which will transmit electricity from the 2,400-megawatt Jiaxing Phase II coal-fired power station to East China via two 500 kV transmission lines.

The complete project duration is just ten months, with delivery scheduled in September 2003. The ELK-3 switchgear are assembled and tested in the factory, which makes them a frequent choice by utilities for projects where short erection times are necessary. Worldwide, ABB is the market leader in gas insulted switchgear technology, with more than 2,000 high-voltage circuit breaker bays up to 800 KV in operation.

This is ABB’s fourth recent contract related to the Jiaxing Phase II power station, and underscores the company’s strong position in the Chinese electric power industry. In December 2002, ABB received a US$ 6 million order to supply distributed control systems for the power station. The scope of supply covers the design, engineering, supply, and site services of control systems for four Chinese manufactured boilers and plant auxiliaries, as well as the balance-of-plant system based on ABB’s Symphony distributed control system technology.

Additional orders included a September 2001 contract for ABB Chongqing Transformer Co. Ltd. to supply four groups of 500 kV/720 MVA generator step-up transformers with a total capacity of 2,880 MVA. In June 2002, ABB Xiamen Low Voltage Equipment Co. Ltd. was chosen to supply 538 low voltage switchgear units for Jiaxing Phase II. According to the project schedule, the first unit of this power station will be ready for commercial operation in early 2004.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering their environmental impact.
