ABB helps build power capacity in Guangdong

Technology supports province in run-up to hot summer months

Beijing , China April 15, 2004 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won a contract worth $9.5 million to increase power capacity in the south of China from Guangdong Guang-Dian Power Grid Group. Co. Ltd.

ABB will deliver high-end power technology to substations in Dongguan, Jiangmen and Jieyang, cities in Guangdong province.

"With more than 100 years experience in power and automation technology, we are in a good position to help China build new power capacity while meeting the needs for a reliable existing power supply," said Peter Leupp, Chairman and President of ABB (China) Ltd.

Power shortages are common in the province because of surging economic and industrial activity. Guangdong is home to three of the four original special economic zones - Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Shantou. In 2002, the province accounted for 42 percent of China's air conditioner output, 35 percent of its color television sets and 28 percent of its personal computers, according to the China Statistical Yearbook 2003.

Under terms of contract, ABB will provide eight power transformers, which are used to convert power from one voltage to another for use in factories, plants, buildings and homes. The transformers should be delivered by the end of November 2004.

They will be manufactured at ABB's Zhongshan Transfomers Co. Ltd and use ABB's patented "Trafostar" technology, which features high resistance to short circuits and a long life span.

Guangdong Guang-Dian Power Grid Group. Co. Ltd. was reorganized from its former body, Guangdong Provincial Power Industrial Bureau, and established in 2001, with registered capital of RMB 80 billion. Its business is focused on power grid investment, power operation and maintenance and the overall capability to design and construct power industries in Guangdong.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering their environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 115,000 people.
